Mother

A series of portraits of my late mother, who lived her entire life in Jerusalem. When I asked to photograph her, she reluctantly agreed mainly for me, but over time gave herself over to the camera.

All the photographs were taken in her apartment; the home she built with my father and continued to uphold as a warm gathering place for our family, for many years after his death.

For a period of about a year, visiting my mother also included taking photographs. Usually without prior preparation, I would photograph her, as well as the objects, rooms and hidden corners of her apartment. These were all part of her, and led me to document her also in her absence/presence.

While the intimate moments we shared in this process were precious to both of us, the photos stand on their own as portraits of a woman, her home, and records of a time and a place that are no more.

The series was presented in a solo exhibition at the Jerusalem Centre for the Performing Arts in 2018.

סדרת צילומי דיוקן של אמי ז"ל, בת ירושלים. כאשר בקשתי לצלם אותה, היא נענתה תחילה בעיקר בשבילי, אבל במשך הזמן התמסרה למצלמה.

כל הצילומים צולמו בבית אשר בנתה עם אבי ז"ל, אך המשיכה לנהל כמוקד משיכה משפחתי וחם, שנים רבות לאחר מותו.

למשך תקופה של כשנה ביקורי אצלה כללו צילומים, לרוב ללא הכנה מוקדמת, הן שלה והן של חדרים ופינות בבית. הבית על חדריו השונים, היה היא, ולפיכך בחרתי גם לצלם את חדרי הבית כשהיא נעדרת-נוכחת בתמונות.

רגעי הצילום ומה שקרה בין שתינו, היו יקרים לנו, אך התמונות עומדות בפני עצמן. מעבר להיותן תמונות של אמי ופינות בביתה, הן גם תיעוד של תקופה ומקום שאינם עוד.

הסדרה הוצגה בתערוכת יחיד בתיאטרון ירושלים בשנת 2018.
